The Bush administration and conservatives everywhere attacked those who opposed the second Iraq war as un-patriotic, even treasonous. The social climate, particularly in the months after the war began, was fearful and few would speak out against the war, and fewer still would defend those who did against the inevitable attack of "un-Americanism".
